Today few Shards remain. The land has fallen into disrepair and lawlessness with the people reverting to a feudal existence, governed by the Brotherhood of Serenity which controls the remaining Shards and their magics with ruthless jealousy.
Jaydon Farcast is an orphan, raised by his aunt and uncle, who dreams of becoming a soldier in the service of his Lord Derwain. But those dreams are shattered when he discovers that he controls two of the legendary Shards – bestowing on him the gifts of both Mind Magic and War Magic and therefore making him, under the Brotherhood’s teachings, unnatural, perverted, and liable for summary execution.
