Publisher's Summary
When the government offers a twenty-six-year-old former Marine a five-figure payday, there’s only one question: Who does he have to kill?
1991. A restless young man called Dox is back home in Texas. His friends have missed him, and his mother and sisters need him. But after four years as a Marine and another two as a CIA contractor fighting the Soviet Union alongside the Afghan mujahideen, small-town life in Abilene is a suffocating dead end.
Another secret war, this one in Southeast Asia, offers a big payday and the solution to his family’s troubles. But secret wars are never what they’re billed to be, and Dox is about to get the education of his young life. Among the lessons—the only thing more dangerous than war is falling in love with your enemy.
Critic Reviews
“Last seen in 2021’s The Chaos Kind, former Marine sniper Dox, a supporting character in bestseller Eisler’s John Rain and Livia Lone franchises, takes center stage…The speedy pace and skillful scene-setting remain Eisler trademarks.”—Publishers Weekly
“The heart and soul of Amok make it much more than a simple story of guns and violence and transcends it to an emotional tale packing quite a punch.”—Best Thriller Books

This relates to recent history. Australia, finally stepped up to liberate East Timor from the Indonesian invasion.
As it turned out my company did some investigation into atrocities committed by elements of the Indonesian forces and, in particular, militias under their control. A complex subject. A complex nation trying to shake free of autocratic control and build a democratic society. Not easy, not simple. But so far so good. Like all societies there are the good and the bad elements. This is true in the US as in any other nation. We can only hope and that in the end human respect for all people will prevail. A good listen from an Australian perspective as this story was a real issue that directly impacted our political discourse.
There are many countries that we pay little attention to at our risk, consumed with our own world. Indonesia is one such. It will be in the top ten economies soon. Ignore at our peril. Read this then explore further.

A great read and listen!
Eisler is a talented author who has created some great characters. This one centres around the lovable and principled Dox. I'm not usually into prequels but this one works really well. the story sets up well and then unfolds with increasing pace and passion.
It also builds to a fitting conclusion that causes you to reflect and enjoy the novel in the rear view mirror.
Eisler too has a captivating voice that works so well and underlines the emotions and the characters so well.
Great work and looking forward to the next please Mr Eisler.
