About this listen

The essential guide to mental health from the bestselling author of The School of Life

This is a book about getting unwell. About losing direction and hope. About imagining that we have let ourselves and everyone down.

But it is also a book about getting better. About regaining the thread, rediscovering meaning and finding a way back to connection and joy.

Here, Alain de Botton follows the arc of a mental health journey, from crisis to recuperation; the moments we realize we cannot cope; the acts of selfcare or therapy in which we find respite; and the days we finally reclaim a sense of stability. Written with understanding and kindness, it is both a source of companionship in our loneliest moments - whether it's a relationship breakdown, a career setback or anxiety around the everyday - and a practical guide that will help us find reasons for hope.

We are all on our own journey towards recovery. This book is for anyone ready to understand theirs.

wonderlly written

Thank you for providing such a beautifully written book in a way that is logical and makes sense. It is also accepting of mental and wellness recognizing that no matter who we are what walk of life we come from at some stage we will all go through challenges that can affect our will to live. Thank you again.

No chapter titles is really annoying

Content great but it needs to be navigable. The absence of content ms as in chapter titles able to be referred to is annoying in all Audible books.

Compassion for Richard Nixon?!!!

I initially loved this book. Then I suddenly heard Richard Nixon being used as a good example of a man who overcame adversity to grow old planting his garden with his grandkids! Richard Nixon?! The Richard Nixon?! We should be happy after all he caused that he “overcame” it all and grew old happy. Somehow, maybe even more so because of the world we are living in today, I felt sick at the thought that a man and a book that acts as a psychological advisor can throw in subtly awful ideas like this. No matter the other good points in this book I wish I could ask for my money back..
