FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE WOLF AND THE WOODSMAN AND JUNIPER AND THORN
If the monsters are real, so are the women who defeat them.
Effy has always believed in fairy tales. She's had no choice. Since childhood, she's been haunted by visions of the Fairy King. She's found solace only in the pages of Angharad - a beloved epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, and then destroys him.
Effy's tattered copy is all that's keeping her afloat through her stifling first term her prestigious architecture college. So when the late author's family announces a contest to design his house, Effy fells certain this is her destiny.
But Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task: a musty, decrepit estate on the brink of crumbling into a hungry sea. And when Effy arrives, she finds she isn't the only one who's made a temporary home there. Preston Héloury, a stodgy young literature scholar, is studying Myrddin's papers and is determined to prove her favourite author is a fraud.
As the two rival students investigate the reclusive author's legacy, piecing together clues through his letters, books, and diaries, they discover that the house's foundation isn't the only thing that can't be trusted. There are dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspiring against them - and the truth may bring them both to ruin.

Slow-moving read
This book came highly recommended but it just wasn’t for me. The plot was almost non-existent, it moved extremely slowly, and it seemed that the themes and ideas were not fully formed and so had little payoff when resolved.

imaginative Gothic mystery
Novels based around mortals (usually women) being forced into the fairy realm are popular now. This is an original and imaginative take on it set in an alternate world that has a 19th century European feel. Effy is a university student who is selected to redesign an eerie, crumbling mansion in a far flung province. The sea and watery images abound as things become strange and frightening. The narrator does a wonderful job.

It was ok.
This book was just ok. I loved the characters, the settings and the overall idea of it. But something missed the mark. It was a bit too slow and a bit predictable in some parts. I finished it, but in 2.0 speed. It’s a shame because I really loved the characters. Narration was great.

Good Concept, bur didn't wow
For some reason I really struggle to finish this book. The premise of thr story was interesting enough, but I just wasn't drawn in. The ending was mostly predictable.

A decaying waterlogged house by the sea 🌊
I loved this book. Erie gothic and atmospheric. It had me at a strangle hold from the first chapter. The narrator was excellent 👌
