About this listen

Everyone knows about the Cambridge Spies from the 1950s, but no spy ring was ever unearthed at Oxford. Because one never existed? Or because it was never found...?

2022: Former spy Simon Sharman is eking out a living in the private sector. When a commission to delve into the financial dealings of a mysterious Russian oligarch comes across his desk, he jumps at the chance. But as Simon investigates, worrying patterns begin to emerge. His subject made regular trips to Oxford, but for no apparent reason. There are payments from offshore accounts that suddenly just...stop. Has he found what none of his former colleagues believed possible, a Russian spy ring now nestled at the heart of the British Establishment? Or is he just another paranoid ex-spook left out in the cold, obsessed with redemption?

Pretty good spy story

The story was well-told and, unlike some spy tales, felt authentic (based on my limited knowledge of spycraft). Charles Beaumont's first book is on a par with the great Len Deighton, John Le Carre and Mick Herron. I look forward to some more of his work. The story was unlike any other I can recall and was entirely believable.
The narration by David Thorpe was excellent. I hope he also narrates any further Charles Beaumont books.

Terrific

I thought this was a great story that was exciting and intriguing. I enjoyed following the plot and trying to second guess the betrayers. This was not a spy story filled with a lot of glamour, such as James Bond, which made it even more appealing. I look forward to Charles’ next book. Narration by David Thorpe was excellent too

A modern day Len Deighton in the making ?

A great espionage story written by someone who appears to have had real life field work experience

It’s somewhere between Len Deighton’s Bernard Samson and Le carre’s Smiley but in a modern day context

I just wish that sometime the good guy could beat up the bad guys but also Make a lot of money and use it for good purpose in the next series but it seems a British theme ..great spooks doing great work and getting crushed and kept poor by the Oxbridge upper echelon …time for a better ending ?

Hard to put down

Clever and pacy

Love an espionage thriller where the players remain human throughout, cracking on with abilities and failures that we all can recognise

Great premise, very realistic setting and characters but last third very weak.

Liked, characters were well developed and realistic, the premise and plot drew you in and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.
Disliked, the story took an odd turn for the last 25-30% of the book, the main character sort of goes rogue and seems very immature, very petty, personal and not so serious given the world shaking events he is dealing with and the build up before then, a great pity . Seemed too trivial.
