About this listen
From the trenches of France, General Sean Courtney comes back to fame, fortune and a seat in the government. Mark Anders, the courageous young South African whom he has come to regard as his own son, returns to nothing, his grandfather murdered and his property seized by an unknown company.
At the bottom of the mystery is Sean's son Dirk, the jealous, violent and power-crazed genius whose all-consuming hatred can only end in blood....

WWI and Natal Parks Board in all its glory
As always, this is exceptionally well narrated and a story that’s thrilling, tragic, stunning and full of love for nature, life, love & friendship … all laced with the horror of war, betrayal, murder and even PTSD.
A must read if you want to understand the Natal bush.

Superb.
Read the book maybe 30 years ago, my third Wilbur Smith novel. Was and am still captivated by his writing. Now listening to his works I’m still riveted. I’ll listen to this and the previous 2 in the series again just for the joy of it.

Twists and turns everywhere and the most remarkably vivid and poignant story. Unbelievably well narrated too.

Thrilling at every turn.
Simply masterful! Sean Barrett is outstanding! Onto the next in the series, but first, I am grieving a little for the end of an era as the Courtney family saga takes a dramatic turn.

An African thriller
A fantastic story of a man's power and greed set on background of war, civil unrest and the early days of the Union of South Africa.
