About this listen

FROM THE GLOBALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

Violet is 38.

The First World War took everything from her. Her brother, her fiancé – and her future. She is now considered a ‘surplus woman’.

But Violet is also fiercely independent and determined. Escaping her suffocating mother, she moves to Winchester to start a new life –a change that will require courage, resilience and acts of quiet rebellion. And when whispers of another world war surface, she must live with a secret that could change everything…

Thoroughly enjoyable

Well read. Pleasing to listen to. Tracey Chevalier is a good author. Her books are descriptive and a delight to follow.

Wonderful!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was beautifully and emphatically written and the narrator - Fenella Woolgar - really bought the characters, particularly Violet, to life. A slow-paced, character driven novel, with themes of family, friendship, identity, place and a particular time in history, A Single Thread was well researched and beautifully woven together. This was my first book by Tracy Chevalier, but it will certainly not be my last.

Unexpectedly UnPutDownable

When I started listening and realised that embroidery was central to the story I debated whether to continue. I had just completed “American Sniper” and felt that a lightweight inconsequential read might lift my mood.
It did.
But cost me 2 nights sleep.
Thoughtful, beautifully written, and I was sorry that it finished.
Can’t wait to return to Winchester to see the kneelers. From Oz.

Beautiful story teller

I absolutely love Tracy Chevalier, I love the simplicity of her stories, the depth of emotion, the centrality of women.

This is my first audio book of hers and I think it diminished the enjoyment somewhat - potentially the setting in pre WW2 in the UK and the toff English accent of the men which I found at times to be super grating on the ears.

Chevalier Creates Depression Tale

Amazing tale of grief, loss; passion and deprivation in Depression England. Like Kate Atkinson, Chevalier reminds us of the cold and hunger of post-war Britain.
