About this listen
With King Richard's return from captivity and Prince John's exile, a weary peace settles on England after years of civil war. But across the border in Wales, the vicious struggle to decide who shall rule Gwynedd still rages.
To tip the balance, the rebel Prince, Llywelyn, calls in an old debt from the Earl of Chester. The Prince saved the Earl's life and helped him take back his city. Now, he wants Sir Roland Inness and the Invalid Company to help him take back his country.

Epic!
I bought this audiobook first from the series, drawn by recent studies into the history of Wales and the Welsh/Cymru, only then realising it was the 5th book in the series! I would have to start from the beginning. Such an amazing combination of vivid sub-stories and great characters all interwoven with actual historical events and figureheads of the time, set upon superb backdrops throughout the British isles and Europe!
This volume by far was my most anticipated, having followed the epic saga - one of many facets, easily followed, well written and ever engaging - it only deepened my interest and curiosity as to where it would now set off into Wales! The story is in constant motion and the author does a well to draw up fantastic dialogue between hearty characters, some new, some familiar, venturing through rough landscapes and wild seas, all colliding to achieve a story of epic proportions!
The only thing that has left me cringing at times, has been the pronunciation of some Welsh names/places.
I think the narrator does extraordinarily well covering such a repertoire of voices and accents as well as he does, to which he ought to be commended on the whole, unfortunately it was just the names and places that I was most drawn to that alas fell short. However, nothing short of epic on the whole!
