About this listen

Award-winning storyteller Bill Gordh (Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence winner, National Association of Parenting Periodicals Gold Award winner) presents this folk tale live with no script, accompanied only by his own dynamic banjo playing.

There was a farmer who worked hard on his land for many years. He and his wife had a little farmhouse and ate their simple meals each night together. One evening the farmer ran down from the fields all excited. His next door neighbor saw the old farmer and wondered what was going on. He sneaked over to the old farmer's house and listened through the window. The farmer told his wife how he had spotted down in a hole full of rocks a kettle that was full of gold coins. It was too late in the day to move all the rocks, but he would in the morning, and they would have plenty!

When the neighbor heard about the gold, he hurried up the hill to the farmer's field to get the gold for himself. Beneath the light of the full moon, he threw all the rocks out of the hole until he was holding the pot. He reached in to feel the gold coins. OUCH! Fire ants swarmed across his hand. The neighbor was angry. The farmer had tricked him. He took the pot and hurried down the hill. He climbed up onto the old farmer's house and cut a hole in the roof. The hole was right above the old couple, who had just gone to bed. The greedy neighbor called down to them, "Here's your pot of gold!" He dumped the pot, and gold coins tumbled out and covered the surprised and delighted old couple!
