About this listen

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

"The war is over. The Separatists have been defeated, and the Jedi rebellion has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning." (Emperor Palpatine)

For a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights brought peace and order to the Galactic Republic, aided by their connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. But they were betrayed - and the entire galaxy has paid the price. It is the Age of the Empire.

Now Emperor Palpatine, once Chancellor of the Republic and secretly a Sith follower of the dark side of the Force, has brought his own peace and order to the galaxy. Peace through brutal repression, and order through increasing control of his subjects’ lives.

But even as the Emperor tightens his iron grip, others have begun to question his means and motives. And still others, whose lives were destroyed by Palpatine’s machinations, lay scattered about the galaxy like unexploded bombs, waiting to go off....

The first Star Wars novel created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group, Star Wars: A New Dawn is set during the legendary "Dark Times" between Episodes III and IV and tells the story of how two of the lead characters from the animated series Star Wars Rebels first came to cross paths. Featuring a foreword by Dave Filoni.

Star Wars Rebels Origin Story

Was nice to hear the backstop with the throwbacks to Republic era and characters from the wider universe (movie, TV, games etc). Narration really got me into it.

Vidian is a DICK!

As a huge fan of Star Wars: Rebels, I was really excited to read this book. The book is very segmented, but so far, that okay with me. Finally, I get to know more about Sloane. The overreaching surveillance of Imperial citizens gave me communist China or even KGB vibes.
Oh my goodness, Count Vidian was such a frustrating character. It felt like we were trying to be a mix of Count Dooku and General Grievous. How is Sloane surprised Vidian would randomly murder people?
I would have loved to get more of Kanan's escape story. I love the bits we got, but I craved to know more. I especially loved Dave Filoni's epilogue. Overall, I very much enjoyed the book.

I'm only just thinking of this now - but is Vidian a nod to the Vidian people from Star Trek Voyager???

ACTION

Loved the slow characters progression throughout the whole novel, need a story of the whole group meeting each other and becoming the ghost crew.

Sorry, I can't listen to this

honestly in one word.... cringe.
even for star wars. Obi Wan and Kanan's interactions pre-order 66 are set up in a way that's supposed to be Kanan is so thoughtful he can almost predict the purge. and him giving Obi wan the idea to reverse the come home order just seems like a needless idea. It doesn't really feel like it enhances any character. Just makes Obi wan seem less resourceful and Kanan seem like a depressing glass half empty padawan.

This is only one problem I have, but I won't pick the story apart further.

performance is fine, but why does this story need to be written, why did the editor not give us a good hook to jump into the book with? why has this story even been made if there's nothing new to explore here? These are my favourite characters in Star wars (Hera & Kanan &Obi Wan) but I'd say skip unless you just need something to listen to but not consume. wish I could refund 😅
