About this listen

Dr Nell Ward is an ecologist, not a detective. But when she's the prime suspect in a murder, only her unique set of skills could help to clear her name....

In the sleepy village of Cookingdean, Dr Nell Ward is busy working in the grounds of a local manor house. Whilst inspecting an old tunnel, she did not expect to overhear a murder. As the only person with any clues as to what happened, Nell soon finds herself in the middle of the investigation.

Desperate to clear her name Nell, along with her colleague Adam, set out solving the murder using their skills as ecologists to uncover details no one else would notice. But it soon becomes clear that playing Agatha Christie is much harder than it might, at first appear....

The start of an exciting new cosy crime series—perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Fiona Leitch, Faith Martin and The Appeal.

Did Nell Ward Murder the Crows?

I really enjoyed this murder mystery by Sarah Yarwood-Lovett. I thought the storyline was fascinating, and including true Science in the narrative piques my interest. I thought there was just the right amount of irrelevant (red herrings) presented alongside relevant information, to keep a reader wondering, but ultimately leading to the conclusion. And I appreciated the explanation of the way the forensics worked to catch the murderer. The narration by Kristin Atherton was outstanding, and she's earned a place among my favourites.

Tried to like it

I really wanted to love this book but found it very hard to finish. I almost gave up a couple of times but perservered. Loved all the references to Nell's work as an ecologist. They made the book but the rest is a mix of a silly soap opera and a weirdly disjointed whodunnit. It was like several different books squeezed into one. Sadly won't be continuing with the series unless it looks like the emphasis on the boring love interests and fascination with the peerage has diminished.
