'A powerful love story spanning generations… Full of ambition and humanity' – Sunday Times

'One of the strongest and most affecting works in Allende's long career' – New York Times Book Review
_______________

On September 3, 1939, the day of the Spanish exiles’ splendid arrival in Chile, the Second World War broke out in Europe.

Victor Dalmau is a young doctor when he is caught up in the Spanish Civil War, a tragedy that leaves his life – and the fate of his country – forever changed. Together with his sister-in-law, the pianist Roser, he is forced out of his beloved Barcelona and into exile.

When opportunity to seek refuge arises, they board a ship chartered by the poet Pablo Neruda to Chile, the promised ‘long petal of sea and wine and snow’. There, they find themselves enmeshed in a rich web of characters who come together in love and tragedy over the course of four generations, destined to witness the battle between freedom and repression as it plays out across the world.

A masterful work of historical fiction that soars from the Spanish Civil War to the rise and fall of Pinochet, A Long Petal of the Sea is Isabel Allende at the height of her powers.

'A grand storyteller who writes with surpassing compassion and insight. Her place as an icon of world literature was secured long ago' – Khaled Hosseini

'A novel not just for those of us who have been Allende fans for decades, but also for those who are brand new to her work: what a joy it must be to come upon Allende for the first time' – Colum McCann

'Allende's style is impressively Olympian and the payoff is remarkable' – Guardian

A good historical account

I struggled to stay focused with this book. It became too much like a list of historical facts with not enough storyline. I didn't know much about the Spanish Civil War and Chile's political history so I did learn a lot.

It’s okay

It took me a while to get into the storyline….the narration was pretty depressing but I in the guess it is a story that we can all relate to, with life’s ups and downs.

beautifully told story

It is fiction, but it is relatable. The characters are believable and the historical element were artfully brought to life in my mind's eye.

Lovely story

Great and easy listen, I loved how the characters navigated their fictional story with actual events that occurred. The narration was beautiful and I loved how the narrator would pronounce all the Spanish words with the correct punctuation. In all I enjoyed this very much.

An enthralling saga against an historical background

The family story was well told against the fascinating history of the Spanish Civil War and the history of Pinochet’s Chile

Amazing story telling

I normally dislike war stories because I'm very sensitive and effected by what happens to characters I care about, but this story was so well told that it was comforting and inspiring.

The story line , Spanish and Chilean Civil War history and culture ,the family who were main characters in this story

Isabelle Allende once again writes beautifully , the story line flows …whilst we learn about one particular family ,the impact and experiences of the Spanish and then Chilean civil wars had on this family and so many others. Loved this , couldn’t put it down!
