About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Featuring an exclusive Q&A between Anthony Horowitz and Adam Hamdy.
I couldn't see the sea from my bedroom, but I could hear the waves breaking in the distance. They reminded me that I was on a tiny island. And I was trapped.
There has never been a murder on Alderney.
It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him.
Very soon they discover that not all is as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.
The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets.
When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects.
There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death....

Loved the setting and the characters
I also enjoyed Anthony’s chat at the end. One point he makes summarises this book, it’s easy to follow and understand the characters and how they merge into the storyline. So many “Who Done Its” are too confusing and disjointed that it’s easy too loose the thread of the story and thus also loose interest. Loved all three in this series

Hawthorne at it again
I've never read a third book in a series before, but I'm glad I read this one. Great story, inkeeping with the style of the earlier books and the characters continue to develop without loosing their integrity and charm.

Great performance and excellent puzzle box!
An excellent third book that continues to be a masterclass in crime writing. Utterly delightful to read, the setting and the plot is a cool puzzle that you can solve before the end if you pay close attention. The characters and the structure is quite typical of the genre but it is kept fresh with subtle shifts. I think it is Umberto Eco who said that repetition with innovation is what keeps the viewer engaged. I was literally glued to the story
The audiobook version is worth listening for Rory Kinnear's performance but it is further made awesome with an interview with the author. I wish I could attend one of his live talks. Here's looking forward to the next 11 books!

Wonderful
I just love the Hawthorne and Horowitz Mysteries and I think they are just getting better. Wonderful plot and writing, very clever concept running through the entire series, and a very satisfying conclusion.
I recommend reading them in order.
Another big plus is an interview with Horowitz at the end, that takes the listener more deeply into the workings of this series' premise, and his writing all round.
I'm eagerly anticipating the next book.

Not the best reader
Unfortunately I find the narrators female voices very annoying. Otherwise a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Anthony Horowitz at it best.

Great addition to the series
The third book is as enjoyable as the first two. Hawthorne is just as annoyingly perceptive, analytical and dismissive of the author as previously, and Anthony continues as his faithful scribe but with fewer faux-pas (in Hawthorne's view, I think, not mine). Horowitz does not flinch from writing of himself as the Watson to Hawthorne's Holmes, and never muscles into the limelight. Great writing, terrific narration from Rory Kinnear and the interview at the end is a brilliant bonus. Roll on Hawthorne 4.
