About this listen
In this exciting historical mystery debut set in Victorian England, a wealthy young widow encounters the pleasures - and scandalous pitfalls - of a London social season.
Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York - for her first London season.
No sooner has Frances begun her new life than the ghosts of her old one make an unwelcome appearance. The Metropolitan Police receive an anonymous letter implicating Frances in her husband’s death. Frances assures Inspector Delaney of her innocence, but she’s also keen to keep him from learning the scandalous circumstances of Reggie’s demise. As fate would have it, her dashing new neighbour, George Hazelton, is one of only two other people aware of the full story.
While busy with social engagements on Lily’s behalf, and worrying if Reggie really was murdered, Frances learns of mysterious burglaries plaguing London’s elite. The investigation brings death to her doorstep, and Frances rallies her wits, a circle of gossips, and the ever-chivalrous Mr. Hazelton to uncover the truth. A killer is in their midst, perhaps even among her sister’s suitors. And Frances must unmask the villain before Lily’s season - and their lives - come to a most unseemly end.

Charming
This is a charming cozy mystery and it always good when the police are not portrayed as so incompetent that the protagonist must solve the mystery.

Predictable
The story was a bit predictable. And I kept getting the male characters confused. Maybe this was just my own misunderstanding but it made things a bit difficult.

Surprisingly fun and engaging
I wasn’t sure if I would like another period story. It’s not really my genre but this book what delightful entertaining. It showcases the fun subtext that other books in the genre sometimes miss and it was very refreshing to have such strong female characters without it feeling unrealistic. The narrator was perfect with a very diverse range. Again, a very delightful book and I am looking forward to the collection

Great story
Good story and narrator is good though she does have some strange inflection in her voice at times. I am definitely keen for the next one. It would have been nice to see the perpetrator's reaction at the end so I felt it was missing a scene at the end.

Could develop into something more interesting
I really wanted to like this. The story was adequate and the characters have potential. I did like the mystery and thought future books could develop on the positives. More showing than telling would help.
Unfortunately, the narrator detracted from the story. Her voice was kind of stuffy and inflections were strangely placed. It made the main characters somewhat boring.
