About this listen

Discover the fate of the original black Magician, Pug, and his motley crew of agents who safeguard the world of Trigia, as prophecy becomes truth in the first book of the last ever Midkemian trilogy.

THE KINGDOM BESIEGED

The Darkness is coming…

The Kingdom is plagued by rumour and instability. Kingdom spies in Kesh have been disappearing – either murdered, or turned to the enemy side. Information has become scant and unreliable; but one thing appears clear. Dark forces are on the move…

Since Pug and the Conclave of Shadows enforced peace after the last Keshian invasion, the Empire has offered no threat. But now factions are rising and Jim Dasher reports mobilizations of large forces in the Keshian Confederacy.

As the men of the West answer the King's call to muster, Martin conDoin – left as caretaker of Crydee Keep – will suddenly be confronted with the vanguard of an invading army. He reminds himself that he is a year older than his legendary ancestor, Prince Arutha, was when he stood firm against the Tsurani invasion, but Arutha had an army to command, and Martin is left with old men and young boys.

Massive events are about to unfold, events which threaten the future of all human life in Midkemia…

Classic Feist

Great book. All the characters you know and love and new ones to get to know. Very character driven which keeps it grounded and feeling realistic while dealing with the overarching High Fantasy themes.
Also Peter Joyce is a great reader and has a really good feel for character voices and line delivery. I wish all my books were read by him.

🤯

Strong characters are developed during this story with a mind blowing, cliff hanger ending.
Bring on the next one!

Rejoice for Joyce

Raymond’s work keeps me enthralled. Joyce’s voice is mesmerising. Onto the next book in the series.

Good story.

It's a wonderful beginning of the finale arc but I don't know what's got into Peter Joyce. All of a sudden he is pronouncing names of places and people verry different and has changed a few characters voices that he has done for like 20 other books.

Fascinating

Well I certainly didn’t expect the turn of events that ended this book. Astounding is all I can say! Another great book and reading by Peter Joyce. Highly recommend.

How the mighty have fallen

Honestly the story picked up speed at chapter 19 and actually seemed captivating.

Having a conversation with characters named Hal, Tal and Ty becomes annoying quickly. Also all new character additions had dull and uninspired personalities.

Overall at least 60 percent of the book felt like it was re-repeating the re-reiterated parts from the previous books. almost like there is no point in reading the previous books...

parts in the demon realm were interesting

I used to love Feist!

This book is ok. I hate it how Feist constantly uses relatives with the same names, like has his imagination reached it's capacity? After reading other authors like RR Martin, Joe Abercrombie, Brandon Sanderson it has made me realise he's a pretty average writer compared to the heavy hitters in modern fantasy. This book was barely worth a listen to be honest. I bet Pug will save the day again... oh what a surprise.

Frustrating

The entire book just drags on. Arcs that could have been FINALISED in half the time dragged on until the last chapter and epilogue.

The entire book is every character asking “why” “why” “why” all learning the same thing separately. That was frustrating, following Jimmy, Sandrina and Martin all figuring out the same thing... what Kesh is doing. We didn’t need 3 boring perspectives and they were boring.
