About this listen

Dark and twisted family roots threaten to strangle their home's foundations in this chilling haunted house novel from the award-winning master of modern horror, T. Kingfisher.

In this ordinary North Carolina suburb, family secrets are always in bloom.

Samantha Montgomery pulls into the driveway of her family home to find a massive black vulture perched on the mailbox, staring at the house.

Inside, everything has changed. Gone is the eclectic warmth Sam expects; instead the walls are a sterile white. Now, it's very important to say grace before dinner, and her mother won't hear a word against Sam's long-dead and little-missed grandmother, who was the first to put down roots in this small Southern town.

The longer Sam stays, the stranger things get. And every day, more vultures circle overhead…

The narrator was very good

The story was very slow to get going and and found the ending to be quite unsatisfactory. The aurhor seemed more concerned with describing the love interests looks than the magic and horror elements in enough depth to make it more than a veneer to the story of entomologist academic finds out that she can have an interesting conversation about bugs with a master gardner which makes him worthy of her attention cause she is fat and smart and great don't you know. The only reason I got to the end was the narrator did a fanatastic job.

Slow paced but interesting

The story was a bit slow to get going, but I liked the characters and the setting.
The story is good, but it’s not particularly scary if that’s what you’re looking for. More a reflection on generational trauma.
I loved the narrator, I think it’s worth a listen!

Interesting premise but not convincing at all

Ok hear me out… when reading books such as Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings, I don’t doubt for one moment that the magic or mystical creatures are real - I believe every aspect of the story even though I know that it obviously isn’t real (or is it?)! In this book, I just don’t believe the author. As a result, the story becomes quite comical!
