About this listen
Bennett Cole had lived next door to Mitchell "Mac" Campbell, III for 18 years of his life, in the small town of White Acre. They'd never gotten along, never seen eye to eye, and never understood one another...not that they'd ever cared to try.
But when Bennett's so-called buddies ditched him at a party in the woods where he was assaulted and left for dead, Bennett pulled through. The emotional scars rendered him too terrified to go back to school and face his "friends" or his attackers. With little choice, his family packed up and left town.
Ten years later - at the request of his mother - Bennett returned to the place he'd grown up and the home he'd once felt safe to oversee the repairs before his childhood house was sold. The contractor? None other than Mac, the once annoying boy next door, who still lives there in the home his parents gifted him.
Being in such close proximity - working together every day to repair the Coles' family home - Bennett and Mac's contentious relationship goes from bad to worse as their personalities continue to clash. But their heated exchanges may not be as antagonistic as they seem. And when new information is revealed, can the men begin to see each other in a different light?
Contains mature themes.

They said geek and nerd about a million times
The narrator slurred his words instead of if emphasising or deepening them so that was hard to listen to but apart from that and the shear amount of times they referred to bennet as a geek and a nerd it was alright I liked how they both had the wrong idea about each other and how it wasn’t just fixed immediately when they noticed it I like that he had to grow and learn.
I skipped the scene where he was beaten up and left for dead bc I can’t handle listening to something like that I skipped from where his friends were encouraging him to drink and I understood the rest of the book perfectly you don’t have to sit through that to understand it you can skip it and be fine so don’t worry about that

Low-angst, enemies-to-lovers, 2nd-chances romance!
Like the boy pulling pigtails, Mitchell ‘Mac’ Campbell has enjoyed stirring up nerdy Bennett Cole ever since they grew up next door to each other. He hasn’t seen Bennett for years after he moved away due to a homophobic assault. Ten years later a successful Bennett is back to oversee the renovation of his parent’s house for sale and to his horror, Mac’s contracting company is doing the work. The two fall back into mutual sniping and umbrage until Mac owns his feelings for Bennett and Bennett develops feelings for Mac.
Despite the initial angst of Bennett’s assault, this is a enjoyably gentle, low-angst second-chances / enemies-to-lovers / small-town romance. Bennett hasn’t fully worked through the assault and tends to be amusingly peevish and risk-averse. Mac is generally even-keeled but his mother manages to rile him every time she compares him to Bennett. They both still feel like older teens rather than men in their mid twenties - that’s not a bad thing, it adds to the mild humour and it makes them human. The always smooth stylings of Sean Crisden’s narration are a favourite of mine, so I loved the audio a lot (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!

excellent narration with mediocre story
the story features many contrived "issues" and half thought out characters...but the narration is lovely and the story is very much a cosy romance.

Constant bickering and sexual tension
I stopped this book twice and came back each time after a few months. Mac is so toxic and unlikeable and I was just hoping a house would fall on him the whole time.
