Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a murder case sets a duo of Black and white lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully-accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from the number one bestselling author David Baldacci.

Jack Lee is a white lawyer from Freeman County, Virginia, who has never done anything to push back against racism, until he decides to represent Jerome Washington, a Black man charged with killing an elderly and wealthy white couple. Doubting his decision, Lee fears that his legal skills may not be enough to prevail in a case where the odds are already stacked against both him and his client. And he quickly finds himself out of his depth when he realizes that what is at stake is far greater than the outcome of a murder trial.

Desiree DuBose is a Black lawyer from Chicago who has devoted her life to furthering the causes of justice and equality for everyone. She comes to Freeman County and enters a fractious and unwieldy partnership with Lee in a legal battle against the best prosecutor in town. Yet DuBose is also aware that powerful outside forces are at work to blunt the victories achieved by the Civil Rights era.

Lee and DuBose could not be more dissimilar. On their own, neither one can stop the prosecution’s deliberate march towards a guilty verdict and the electric chair. But together, the pair fight for what once seemed impossible: a chance for a fair trial and true justice.

Right will always win over wrong

Another excellent story with twists and turns in every chapter.
Not your typical Baldacci story but a superb book.

Riveting and touching

This book as did “wish you well” ,touched me deeply and I thank and congratulate David Baldacci for his wonderful ability to present the human spirit in such an uplifting and entertaining way even when it’s against such a dark and evil background ..we learn a lot from Baldacci ‘s insight

confronting that this was only the year I was born

Well written and narrated, but gut churning in the details of racism and bigotry. It is fiction but as the author says at the beginning this is drawn from his knowledge and experiences of the times, and knowing this up front I think changes how you look at the details set out in the story. I found myself cringing at some of this, and angry in others. It moved me like few books have.

Cruelty of racial prejudice

Held off reading this initially because I thought it would be a difficult listen. It was but it was a great thought provoking story which I know was the way then and in many parts of the US is now despite protestations otherwise. Terrific well developed characters which you could see so clearly many making you angry and disgusted many making you feel triumphant about especially Jack and Desiree.

Soulful, tragic and hopeful

This is undoubtedly the best this author has written. Whilst there is little hope for the south of America and racism, this book brings the reader to consider the possibilities. Absolutely brilliant, Harper Lee would be proud.
