About this listen
Who was the real King Arthur? What do the historical documents tell us about the Knight of the Round Temple? It is just a chivalric fantasy? The story of Arthur has been handed down to us by medieval poets and legends - but what if he actually existed and was in fact a great king in the early years of Britain's story? Mike Ashley visits the source material and uncovers unexpected new insights into the legend: There is clear evidence that the Arthurian legends arose from the exploits of not just one man, but at least three originating in Wales, Scotland, and Brittany. The true historical Arthur really existed and is distantly related to the present royal family.
Mike Ashley is the author of the best-selling Brief History of the Kings and Queens of England and has been fascinated by the story of King Arthur for decades. He lives in Chatham, Britain.

Magnificent! Great reading. 10/10.
The finest Arthurian book of all time. I purchased ‘The Mammoth Book of King Arthur’ by Mike Ashley about 10 years ago and return to it annually. This iteration is basically the first half of that book (and the best part!). It is a comprehensive effort laying out the historical backdrop, discussing the principal early sources and analysing the possible historical candidates for ‘Arthur’. This audiobook is a godsend! Great reading by the narrator always sounds engaged, well-paced and it’s awesome to hear all the Welsh pronunciations and placenames etc. If you have to buy 1 Arthurian (audio) book this is it. It’s a great beginning point to whet your appetite for further reading and research. I’d place this along with Rachel Bromwich’s Arthur of the Welsh and The Triads (not available as an audio DL unfortunately) as the building blocks of your Arthurian library.
