About this listen

Full of shocks, intensity and suspense from first minute to last, Banquet of Consequences reveals Lynley and Havers under pressure.

The suicide of William Goldacre is devastating to those left behind. But what was the cause of his tragedy, and how far might the consequences reach? Is there a link between the young man's leap from a Dorset cliff and a horrific poisoning in Cambridge?

Following various career-threatening misdemeanours, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is desperate to redeem herself. So when a past encounter with best-selling feminist writer Clare Abbott and her pushy personal assistant, Caroline Goldacre, gives her a connection to the Cambridge murder, Barbara begs DI Thomas Lynley to let her pursue the crime.

Soon Lynley finds himself investigating the London end of an ever more darkly disturbing case while Havers and DS Winston Nkata look behind the peaceful façade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire and deceit.

Worth the effort

The Story takes a little while to develop, but it is well worth the effort. In the end it becomes quite intoxicating with it twists and turns. This is my first novel by Elizabeth George and her well worn characters. I had no trouble in following the back story of the main characters and am now progressing to their stories. The back stories of the characters did not ruin the current story and has sparked my desire to discover how things came about and get to know the characters better. I am going to follow the stories in reverse in order, - so nice to find a new author that one enjoys.

a long banquet with lots of consequences

It's a decent enough story - yes - it keeps you interested - up to a point - because you think you're going to get to the meat of the issue at some stage - and yes - the characters are finely drawn and all the rest - but OMG - i think the book could have been written in half the time - you listen to these b!@@#y english people moaning, catastrophising, overcomplicating everything and carrying on from the beginning til the end - (I must have screamed out: "Just stop yabbering and say what you think!" about 5 times at the stereo) and right when you get to the crux - the author just glosses over it!! I listened for 20 hours waiting for the great game-of-cat-and-mouse interview - I was sure it was coming - you know - where the cop corners the killer into getting the confession - does it ever come? nope! Ultimately unsatisfying.
