四国・高知の山奥にある隠れ里。茂伸(ものべの)――
「恐れ」が変質していく中、誰からも恐れられなくなり忘れ去らて、消えようとしていくあやかしたちが、逃れるように集ってくる土地。
その移住の影には土地神である「ご開祖ちゃん」があやかしたちを招き入れ、定住を支援しているという事実があります。
その招きに応じるか悩んで動けなかった人吉・球磨のあやかし、雪御嬢のゆき。
ゆきを引っ張り、移住の後押しをしたあやかしが、いんがめです。
ほゆるという人間だったときの名前も忘れて、隠れるように暮らしていたいんがめは、無二の友を得ます。
雪と氷を操るあやかし――雪御嬢の、ゆきです。
おっとりとして包容力にすぐれるものの行動力には欠けるゆき。
活発で世話焼きだけれど後先をあまりかんがえないいんがめ。
ふたりはすぐに大の親友になり、長い長い時間を、ともにしあわせにすごします。
けれど、かつて畏れられ敬われていた“雪御嬢”が、架空の存在と軽んじられるようになると、ゆきはめきめきと弱っていきました。
そんな最中に訪れた、ものべのへの招き。
動けぬゆきを、いんがめは無理矢理ひっぱって、ものべのへ強制的に移住させます。
けれどいんがめは、招かれぬ土地での苦労にさらされることとなってしまいます。
