About this listen
Winner of the 2013 Nebula Award for best novel.
The year is 2312. Scientific advances have opened gateways to an extraordinary future. Earth is no longer our only home; new habitats have been created throughout the solar system, on moons, planets and in between. But in 2312, a sequence of events will force humanity to confront our past, present and future.
The first event takes place on Mercury, in the city of Terminator, itself a miracle of engineering on an unprecedented scale. For Swan Er Hong, it will change her life. Once a designer of worlds, now Swan will be led into a plot to destroy them.
2312 is a bold vision of humanity's future and a compelling portrait of those individuals who will shape its events.

Half technical manual & half a book of poetry
Half technical manual & half a book of poetry.
The plot is simple but made complicated by too much detail in abstract places and no detail in others.
I felt it lacked a good flow and I had no connection with any of the characters.
Not my cup of tea.

procedural story telling and narration
I love KSR's grand historical fictions. They are often optimistic demonstrations of how humanity can survive it's innate short comings. And his idiosyncratic method of recounting events can be mesmeric. But this one goes to far, eschewing any "show" for all "tell", reinforced by the narrator's monotonal delivery, leaving the reader/listener working hard to lever something emotional from the experience, (and I've been both).

Performance not skilled enough for the material
There are some great ideas in this book but the narrator just wasn't skilled enough to pull it off. So often you find yourself wondering who is speaking or involved in the action. As a result you stop listening without intending to and realise it's been 5 minutes since you took anything in. A slog to get through.
