 Frankreich im Jahr 1356. Der berüchtigte englische Bogenschütze Thomas of Hookton, genannt "der Bastard", kämpft mit seiner Söldnertruppe für fast jeden. Im Auftrag des widerlichen Comte de Labrouillade befreien Thomas und seine Männer dessen entlaufene Ehefrau. Doch Labrouillade ist nicht bereit, den versprochenen Lohn zu zahlen und versucht Thomas mit wertlosen Münzen abzuspeisen. Kurzerhand nimmt Thomas die wunderschöne Bertille mit - und schafft sich damit einen Feind fürs Leben.

Zur selben Zeit versammelt Edward, Prince of Wales, ein Heer. Von seinem Lehnsherrn erhält Thomas den Auftrag, nach dem geheimnisvollen Schwert zu suchen und dieses an Edward zu übergeben.
