 2025年大河ドラマは「べらぼう～蔦重栄華乃夢噺～」。蔦重こと蔦屋重三郎は、「浮世絵黄金期」と呼ばれた江戸時代の、天明～寛政期（1781年～1801年）に、版元として活躍した。当時の版元は手短に言えば出版社と書店を兼ね備えた職種で、版元の社長である蔦重は、編集と出版プロデューサーの役割も果たした。

本書では、出版王・蔦屋重三郎と、彼と深く関わり江戸中期の文化を創った絵師・作家13人を紹介する。13人とは、喜多川歌麿、葛飾北斎、北尾重政、勝川春章、鍬形蕙斎（北尾政美）、十返舎一九、朋誠堂喜三二、山東京伝（北尾政演）、曲亭馬琴、恋川春町、四方赤良（大田南畝）、石川雅望（宿屋飯盛）、東洲斎写楽。

蔦重の最大の功績は、名プロデュ―サーとして数々の異才を世に送り出したことと言えるだろう。その中で、蔦重が発掘して大出世した代表格が、浮世絵師の喜多川歌麿だ。画力はあるものの、いまひとつパッとしなかった歌麿を、蔦重は恋女房ともども店舗兼自宅に住まわせ、その才能を開花させた。そしてもう１人、東洲斎写楽は、蔦重がデビューさせた絵師だ。1794年から1795年のわずか10カ月という活動期間に145点以上の作品を残し、その後、忽然と姿を消したせいで、その正体が今もなお謎とされている。
