Ein kleines Dorf zwischen Marsch und Geest im südlichen Schleswig-Holstein erlebt im Dezember des Jahres 1851 düstere Zeiten. Der Aberglaube steckt tief in den Köpfen der Dorfbewohner und die bevorstehenden Rauhnächte – auch 12 Nächte genannt - eilen ihrem Ruf voraus. Seltsame Geschehnisse zerren an den Nerven der Einwohner. Jonathan Fenris, Gesandter des Klosters zu Uetersen, soll Licht ins Dunkle bringen. Als im Dorf bestialische Morde geschehen, fällt der Verdacht jedoch auf ihn. Besonders misstrauisch ist der Vogt der kleinen Gemeinde. Die Ereignisse überschlagen sich und als Fenris nur knapp einem Attentat entgeht, steht für ihn fest: Er wird den Mörder mit den übermenschlichen Kräften dingfest machen. Werden ihm seine außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten dabei helfen?
