About this listen

From James Patterson, the world’s bestselling author, comes a new Audible Original thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.

After the killing of a prominent mob lawyer, NYPD homicide detectives Jacob Jackson and Caitlin Grimes start receive chilling, written “rules” for how to commit the perfect murder. "Rule number one for the perfect murder: Evidence is your enemy. Leave none behind."

Jackson (Reid Scott) and Grimes (Cobie Smulders) race to find the killer, setting them on a collision course with the city’s crime underbelly, and a perpetrator who seems happy to toy with them. “Rule number two. No crimes of passion. The perfect murder is always business, never pleasure.”

As the cryptic notes keep coming and the body count grows, the detectives must untangle the mystery to protect more innocent lives from being lost—including their own.

Please note: This audio drama is for mature audiences only. It contains violence and strong language. Discretion is advised.

Didn't see that coming

An enjoyable listen overall, narration was great as it really helped keep me involved along with a stroy line from James that I'm used to. Honestly thought I'd been able to guess who the killer was pretty quickly but turns out that was wrong. Liked the ending, was a twist I didn't see coming that's for sure.

Cobie Smoulders in Detective Drama

From the get-go, this James Patterson novella has an authentic soundtrack with character voices, location sounds and volume fades to echo real-life audio and place the listener in the situation. The banter is jovial and interesting, and flows alongside the story. This is not your usual cop story, with a few shocking turns to keeep the listener's mind as active as if reading the words on a page. This Audible production is of an exceptional standard, and a quick, enjoyable read.

Actors Do Patterson's Story Proud

What can I say. James Patterson does it again with a rollercoaster ride of drama & emotion, as this crime story unfolds.

This was an excellent performance, that really made James Patterson's Story realistic & believe. I got swept away in this Audible rendition & felt I was witnessing first hand everything unfold.

One of the best Audible dramatic readings I've experienced. Terrific pairing.

Good story, annoying music

Story was great, the music score was too loud, and a waste of time as it faded in and out as though you were watching TV with advert breaks. Totally unnecessary.

A great twist - Easy listening

James Patterson’s latest is a slick, tightly wound thriller that plays with the classic detective narrative. The “rules” concept adds an inventive twist, though the plot ultimately favours pace over profundity. With a polished full-cast performance, it’s a brisk, engaging listen—crime fiction as comfort food, satisfying without being revolutionary.

The audio performance was amazing.

This was my first audio drama. It was so awesome. I loved how each character had their own performer. It was so fun to listen to.
