京都市の下坂厚さんは46歳の夏、アルツハイマー型若年性認知症の診断を受けました。
簡単な計算を間違えたり、家に忘れ物をしてきたり、なんだかおかしいな……ということが少しずつ増え、もの忘れ外来を受診。
「病名を聞いたときは、比喩でなく、本当に目の前が真っ暗に……」。
診断後、働いていた鮮魚店を辞め塞ぎ込んでいた下坂さんを、妻の佳子さんは見守り続けました。そんな絶望の淵に光がさします。
認知症当事者を支援する団体との出会いをきっかけに、下坂さんは介護施設でケアワーカーとして働き始めます。
そして、同じ病気の人の姿を見て勇気づけられたように、自分を見て勇気づけられる当事者や家族はきっといるはずという思いから、現在は認知症について広く知ってもらうための啓蒙活動にも尽力しています。
