「愛」と「現実」にゆれる女。 堀辰雄の唯一のロマン（本格的長編物語）で、堀文学の到達点といわれる晩年の代表作です。主人公の女性、菜穂子の母が娘にあてて綴った遺書がわりの手記である「楡の家」と、その後日談である「菜穂子」の二篇からなり、1934（昭和9）年に「楡の家 第一部」が「物語の女」の表題で、1941（昭和16）年に「楡の家 第二部」が「目覚め」の表題で「文學界」に、「菜穂子」が「中央公論」に掲載された。「菜穂子」では結婚後、高原のサナトリウムに入院している菜穂子が幼なじみの都築明と再会し、自分の人生を考え直す。
