芸術のあり方を模索した初期の代表作
『草枕』は明治39年（1906年）に発表された熊本県玉名市小天（ルビ：おあま）温泉を舞台にした中編小説であり、『吾輩は猫である』『坊っちゃん』と並ぶ初期の代表作。
「智に働けば角（かど）が立つ。情に棹（さお）させば流される。意地を通せば窮屈だ。兎角（とかく）に人の世は住みにくい。」という書き出しで有名だが、劇的な物語の展開があるわけではない。
美とは何か、憐れとは何か――
主人公である青年画家が東京からの旅の途中、滞在した温泉宿で出会った謎めいた女性・那美に出会い、謎めいた彼女の魅力や、戦争によって揺れていく人の暮しを描写していく。
世塵から離れた風光明媚な温泉地を舞台に、西欧文明への批判を込めて、漱石自身の芸術論を主人公の長い独白として織り交ぜていると言われる。豊かな語彙と文章で、絵画的に詩情あふれる世界を落ち着いた朗読で収録している。(c)2016 Pan Rolling
