 『若草物語』は、作者のルイザ・メイ・オルコット自身が過ごした子ども時代を元に描いた、自叙伝的な物語です。時はクリスマス。
物語の中心となるマーチ家には、長女のメグ、次女のジョー、三女のベス、末っ子のエミーの四姉妹、優しい母、お手伝いのハンナがいて、彼女たちは戦争で不在の父の帰りを待ちながら暮らしています。
そんな中、隣に住む裕福な家庭のローレンス家との交流が始まり、15歳のローリーとその祖父、ローレンスさんと親しくなるマーチ家。
お互いに行き来して楽しい日々を過ごしますが、ジョーとエミーの間の争い、メグの秘密、ベスの病気、など様々な波乱がマーチ家で起こります。そして戦地の父の病気を伝える電報が届いたことにより、母も不在になって暗い日々を過ごす四姉妹。
そうして月日はめぐり、再び迎えたクリスマス。そこへ届いたクリスマスプレゼントとは……？
