＜あらすじ＞

別々にみると二人ともごく良い人間なのだが、この二人が顔を合わせると必ずといってもよいほど何かしら口争いが始まるのである。
ある年の夏。大暴風雨に襲われ決壊した堤防の復旧工事に着手した作事奉行灰島市郎兵衛は、事務上の加役として、八木次郎太と西郡至を選んだ。
