＜第十二回＞

安らぎを求めて――夏目漱石
夏目漱石（1867～1916）は、もちろん、森鷗外とともに日本の近代文学を確立した大家ですが、漢詩人としても独自の個性を発揮し、大きな足跡をしるしています。
彼は小学校時代から漢詩文や中国美術を好み、漢学塾の二松学舎（にしょうがくしゃ＝今日の二松学舎大学の前身）に学びましたが、帝国大学（東京帝国大学の前身）では英文学を修め、卒業後は松山や熊本で教壇に立ちました。34歳の時イギリスに留学し、帰国後、教職のかたわら創作への意欲を強め、30代の終わりから創作に専念、評論や講演も手がけました。
漢詩の作風から見ると、次の四期に分けることができます（和田利男『漱石漢詩研究』による）。第一期（洋行以前）＝十代半ばから、イギリスに留学する34歳まで。第二期（修善寺大患の時期）＝44歳の秋から四か月間。第三期（南画趣味の時期）＝46歳から48歳のころまで。第四期（『明暗』執筆時）＝『明暗』を執筆・連載中の50歳、生涯最後の年。
