第八回 涙の手まり唄――良寛
良寛和尚は越後（新潟県）出雲崎（いづもざき）の生まれ。家は代々名主（なぬし）を勤めていましたが、彼自身は十八歳のころ出家し、四十代後半に出雲崎の東北にある国上山（くがみやま）に隠居、以後は文化人たちと交流し、農民や子供たちと親しく過ごしました。漢詩のほか、和歌や書に秀でていました。七十歳のとき、貞心尼（ていしんに）という二十九歳の尼僧と出会って親交を深め、貞心尼の残した『蓮（はちす）の露』は両人の和歌を多く収めるとともに、良寛の貴重な伝記資料となっています。
良寛の詩は、禅僧としての心境を示したもの、反対に世俗的な悩みを告白したもの、農村の生活をたたえるものなどに分類できます。そしてそれら全体から感じられるのは、深い悲しみ――人間の身勝手さや、越後の人々の境遇、また自分自身の不如意な人生に対する、深い悲しみの情なのです。
