光源氏 五二歳

大空の日の光さへつくる世の
やうやく近きここちこそすれ

年が改まり、六条院に春がめぐってきたが、光源氏の悲しみの心は晴れることがない。
四季を通じて、紫の上を偲び、自己の人生の回顧にふける源氏は、その年の暮れに身辺を整理し、紫の上からの手紙も燃やす。そして、いよいよ出家の志を固めるのだった。

雲隠 くもがくれ

かきくらす涙か雲かしらねども
ひかり見せねばかかぬ一章

この「雲隠」は、巻名のみ残っているが本文は存在しない。死を暗示する巻名のとおり、光源氏はここで生涯を閉じている。
