光源氏 三一～三二歳

さくらちる春の夕のうすくもの
涙となりておつるここちに
明石の君（あかしのきみ）はついに娘の明石の姫君を紫の上に預けることを決意する。光源氏は母と子を引き離してしまった自分の罪深さを心苦しく思う。紫の上も、二条院に迎えた明石の姫君のかわいらしさを見るにつけ、母親はどれほど悲しく寂しいことだろうと、明石の君を思いやる。
藤壺（ふじつぼ）が重い病となり、息を引き取った。法要の後、藤壺に長く仕えていた僧が、冷泉帝（れいぜいてい）に出生の秘密を打ち明ける。光源氏が実の父親だと知った冷泉帝は源氏に譲位を申し出るが、源氏は辞退する。
源氏は親代わりで後見している故六条御息所の娘斎宮（さいぐう）に恋愛の目を向けるがようやく自制する。
また、明石の君のことをたえず気にかけ、通うのに困難な大井の山荘にも時おり足を運んでいた。
