この中将姫にあたるのが、物語の主人公となる藤原南家郎女である。
中将姫は奈良時代に藤原豊成の娘として生まれ、4歳で「称讃浄土経」に出会ったことで観音様を深く信仰。
10代の中頃、「称讃浄土経」の写経を始め、1000巻の写経を成し遂げたある日、夕陽の中に阿弥陀仏の姿が浮かび上がる光景を目にする。
その阿弥陀仏は、物語の冒頭で二上山山頂で眠りから目覚める死者……中将姫の尊い俤(おもかげ)びとである大津皇子なのである。
中将姫は、その俤びとを曼荼羅に織り上げることで彷徨う魂を鎮め、自身も極楽浄土へと旅立つ。この二上山は、謀反の嫌疑がかけられ非業の死を遂げた大津皇子の魂が眠る地とされている。©2023 PanRolling
