 曲がったことが嫌いで喧嘩の絶えない真之助。あるとき流人の伝吉から身の上話を聞くと、真之助の従妹である双葉の婚約相手・孫次郎が、伝吉の妹の死に関わっていることを知る。伝吉の妹の仇討ちの結末と、真之助と双葉の思いの行方は。

備前岡山藩士の真之助は怒りっぽくて喧嘩が絶えない。それがもとで江戸勤めから国に戻って来たところだ。叔父である大横目の竜右衛門が、有能な部下の孫次郎を娘の双葉と婚約させたと知り、柄にもなく胸が痛む。ある日、真之助は逃亡中の流人の伝吉から彼の妹の仇打ちの話を聞く。なんとその仇とは孫次郎だった。ほどなくして伝吉は孫次郎に斬られて死んでしまう。そんな折、双葉が何者かに連れ去られ……。

山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろ）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2022 panrolling Historical Fiction
