 信長がめをかける家臣・曾我平九郎は無骨に武芸に励む男。信長は平九郎を見込んで侍女の若菜を妻にとらせようとするも、すれ違いが続き……。時を経ても変わらぬ忠義を尽くす家臣と侍女と、彼らを思う主君の人情物語。

曾我平九郎は信長がめをかける家臣である。信長は侍女の若菜を平九郎の妻にと取りなしてくれるが、武道一筋の平九郎には信長の思いが伝わらず、たびたびすれ違ってしまう。平九郎は勘当されて尾張を立ち去る。そして時は桶狭間の戦いに。織田勢に謎の武者2人の助力があり、敵の今川義元を討ち取ることに成功する。その2人とは、なんと平九郎と若菜だった。夫婦で討ち死にする覚悟で、情けをかけてもらった殿のために戦いに赴いたのだ——。

山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろ）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2022 panrolling Historical Fiction
