 新型コロナウイルス・オミクロン変異体の塩基配列（RNAを構成する、四つの塩基の並び方）の変異を見て、ウイルス学者である著者は凍りついた。「同義置換が1、非同義置換が30、こんなことはありえない」。同義置換とは、アミノ酸の変異が起こらない塩基配列の置換のことであり、非同義置換はアミノ酸の変異が起こる塩基配列の置換のことを指す。通常、同義置換／非同義置換はランダムに入るため、同義置換が1で非同義置換が30というのは明らかな異常であると言わざるをえない。それから著者は、本格的にオミクロン変異体の塩基配列の解析に乗り出した。

著者はオミクロンBA.1が出現する直前に、オミクロンBA.1の変異から一つのアミノ酸が武漢型に戻った配列の変異体があるはずだという仮説のもとで検索を行った。オミクロンBA.1に変異する一つ前の、いわば「親」となる変異体である。すると、自然界では到底ありえない事態が起こっていることが判明したのである。
