 ゆきすぎた御定法の改新で、町奉行は幾度も苦境に立たされている。それでも一度触れ出された法令をたやすく変えることはできない。藩士の中所直衛は、ある商人からの訴えの裁きをもって御定法に威厳と基準を与えようと決意する。

御定法の改新があり、一商人が藩士を訴えることができるようになった。藩の莫大な財産をあてにして藩士に金を貸した商人の要屋が藩士の矢堂玄蕃を訴える。町奉行は藩の面目を守るために矢堂に切腹させるほかないという結論に至る。藩士の直衛と宗兵衛は、それではかえって藩の威信を失う、きちんとお白洲で裁きの決着をつけるべきだと考える。御定法にもよらず、御家の面目にもきずをつけずに裁くことができると主張する直衛。うんざりするような長い調べの末、直衛は奉行所で裁きを言い渡し……。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2022 PanRolling Asian
