郷田三郎はこの世の全てに面白さを感じることが無く退屈しきっていた。
そんな郷田は友人の紹介で素人探偵の明智小五郎と知り合い、「犯罪」に興味を持つようになる。
そして、意味もなく人を尾行してみたり、労働者や学生などに変装してみたりしたが、殊更に女装が気に入って、女の姿できわどい悪戯をするなど、犯罪として捕まることのない「犯罪の真似事」を楽しみとするようになった。
だが、3カ月ほど経ち「犯罪の真似事」にも飽きてしまった頃、郷田は新築の下宿屋・東栄館に引っ越した。

ある日、偶然郷田は押し入れの天井板を外して屋根裏に入れることに気付き、各部屋の仕切りのない屋根裏からこっそり住人たちの私生活を覗き見ることが新たな楽しみとなった。
この「屋根裏の散歩」はいつの間にか忘れかけていた郷田の犯罪嗜好癖をくすぐるのに十分なものであった。

ある日、郷田は一番虫の好かない歯科助手の遠藤の部屋の天井に節穴が開いているのを見つけ、この節穴から遠藤の口にモルヒネを垂らして毒殺することを思い立ったのであった……©2020 PanRolling Horror Mystery
