神田香織は、福岡県立磐城女子高校卒業後、東京演劇アンサンブル、渡辺プロダクションドラマ部を経て1980年、講談の神田山陽門下生となる。照明、音響を取入れた舞台作品として、一人芝居の要素を取入れた独自の講談を次々と発表、講談の新境地を切り開いた。時は江戸時代初期。佐久間勘解由の営む宿屋にお竹という質素で働き者の若い女が奉公にやってくる。ある時、風呂番の同僚が急に退職した。お竹は給金の増額を条件にその仕事を引き継ぐ。日ごろ彼女を慕ってやってくる物乞いたちをアルバイトに使い増額分を分配するという作戦である。高価な薪のかわりに木材の切れ端を拾い集めさせるなど、雇用促進と経費節約を同時に実現する“改革”を見事にやってのけた。ある日、主人の知り合いの行者が来訪し「お竹さまは大日如来のご化身」と告げたため周囲は大騒ぎとなる。その後も、困った人に親切に、残り物を大切に、客に居心地良く…と気を配ったので評判となり宿は大繁盛した。やがてお竹が死ぬと台所にまばゆい光が射しあたりを照らした。やはり大日如来の化身だったと、さらに評判を呼び、流しを拝みにくる人が絶えなかったという。五代将軍・綱吉の生母、桂昌院は伝え聞き「お竹こそ女性の鑑」と讃えた。実話である。(C)WING ENTERPRISE
