毎夜のごとく悪夢に悩まされる男の記憶が徐々にほどかれていく、そのプロセスを追ったホラータッチの短編。語り手の菊池幸男（59）は若い頃からもう何十年も、ある家の夢にうなされ続けてきた。舞台は昭和20年代から30年代に建てられたであろう、粗末な木造の一軒家で、主役は少年といっていい歳ごろの自分。人気のない屋内を進むと、廊下の突き当りに便所がある。汲み取り式で、夢の中でも酷く臭う。その便所で毎回、惨劇が起き、目を覚ます。既に間取りは勿論、細部や畳の感触まで正確に思い出せるほどなじんだ家は、気味が悪いほど現実味を帯びていた。にもかかわらず、自分には夢の中と同じ家に住んだ記憶はない。それ以上に、中学校はじめ頃までの記憶が完全に欠落していた。自分を育ててくれた祖父母からは、父親は死に、母親は家出をしたと聞かされたが、それと何か関係があるのか？ あの家は実在するのか？ 読む者さえ悪夢に引き摺り込む逸品。
