「彼は門を通る人ではなかった。また門を通らないで済む人でもなかった。要するに、彼は門の下に立ちすくんで日の暮れるのを待つべき不幸な人であった」 『門』は明治43年(1910年)に発表された夏目漱石の長編小説であり、『三四郎』『それから』に続く前期三部作の締めくくりとなる作品である。『それから』のその後の展開であり、社会の片隅でひっそりと暮らす過去に傷を持つ夫婦の苦悩、悲哀がテーマとして描かれている。平穏な日常を仲睦まじく淡々と重ねる夫婦の生活と、その奥に秘められた暗い過去の罪悪感と不安の日々。親友であった安井を裏切って、彼の内縁の妻であった御米を奪い結婚した宗助。「山の中にいる心を抱いて、都会に住んでいた」とあるように、彼らはその罪悪感ゆえ、社会から切り離された二人だけの世界にこもり続けていた。しかしある時、思いがけず知ることになったかつての親友、安井の消息に宗助の心は激しく乱れてしまう。恐怖、そして蘇ってくる重い罪の心。悩み苦しむ宗助は、心の動揺や不安から逃れたい一心で、妻の御米に内緒で禅寺の「門」をくぐる。しかしそこには解答も救済もなかった…。過去の罪から逃れる術はあるのか?救いはあるのか?希望も絶望もない、どうにもならない…。それでも生きていかねばならない、生きていくことの痛みとは…?静かに心に染みる味わい深い夏目漱石の名作です。この『門』の連載終了後、漱石は胃潰瘍のため入院することになる。血を吐いて倒れ、生死の境をさまよう。いわゆる“修善寺の大患”である。
