小さなホテルに勤める続力（つづき・ちから）は、顧客の「お別れの会」の案内状の宛名書きを依頼するため、町で書道教室を営む遠田薫（とおだ・かおる）のもとを訪れる。遠田はなにやら過去のありそうな男だが、さまざまな筆跡を自在に書きこなす腕前の持ち主だった。続が文面を考え、遠田がそれを書き記す形で、二人は協力して手紙の代筆業をはじめることになるのだが――。

＜オーディオファースト作品を執筆するにあたり＞（三浦しをん）
　朗読にふさわしい題材はなにかなと考えて、「文字」を選びました。「文字」は、（点字などを除いて）基本的には目で見て認識するものです。視覚情報である「文字」についてのストーリーを、音声のみで表現してもらったら、おもしろいんじゃないかなと思いました。
　目論見がうまくいったかどうかはわかりませんが、個人的には、音声を通して情景が浮かんできたり、思わずくすっと笑ってしまったりと、自分が書いた文章だということを忘れて聞き入りました。みなさまにもお楽しみいただけましたら幸いです。
