＜あらすじ＞
時は、安政六年十月七日の朝。 安政大獄と呼ばれた大疑獄が、まさに終段に入りつつある時のことだった。掃部頭井伊直弼によって、遠島の罪に決まっていたはずの橋本左内は、なぜか死罪となった————。
「左内ゆかりの者」と名乗り、左内の遺骸を引取りにやってきた者の中に一人の娘がいた。娘は福井藩士、喜多勘蔵の二女で香苗と言い、香苗は左内の三つ下のまた従兄妹で、幼なじみでもあった。
因幡守穆清に「従容として時世の詩を認め、静かな微笑さえ見せながら、帰するが如く」という左内の最期の様子を聞いた香苗は、自分のよく知っている筈の左内との姿に違和感を感じる……。
