 　三太郎君が勉強に飽きて裏庭に出てみると、ジメジメした土の上にあかんぼの頭ぐらいの白い丸いものが見えます。それは一つの大きな卵で、その横の地面には、こう書いてありました。

　……三太郎様へ……露子より



　露子さんと三太郎君が初めて顔を見合ったのは、今年の春の初めでした。それは隣家に越してきた露子さんが、二階の窓からこちらを見下ろす視線と、勉強していた三太郎くんの視線とが、一瞬スレ違っただけでした。それから後、二人は毎日のように顔を合わせておりました。お互いに恋を感じていることを知りながらも、ウッカリ視線でも合うと、慌てて眼をそらして、家の中へ引っ込んでしまうのでした。そうしてトウトウニッコリし合う機会が一度もないうちに、別れなくてはならなくなったらしいのです。



　三太郎君は、それから毎晩その卵を抱いて寝ました。三太郎君は卵が可愛ゆくなりました。こわさないようにソッと抱いて寝るのが、この上もない楽しみになって来ました。

　そのうちに卵は次第に変化して来るようでした。中から聞こえる寝息と思っていた物音が、夜の更けるにつれて高まって、しまいにはウンウンという唸り声かと思われるようになりました。

　三太郎君は気味がわるくなって来ました……
