だけど母親の心の中は……。戦争中の運命と偶然の出会いによって生まれた不思議な母子のお話。

「名前は何ていうの」通りがかりの老紳士が子どもに問いかける。「ジャン」。「苗字は？」さらに聞くと、「この子に苗字はございません」とその子の母親が答えた。
「実はあれがわたしの子かどうか、わかりませんのです」言葉の調子が悲しそうで、何となく愁いにやつれた顔をしていた――。
戦争中の産科病院で同じ時に同じ男の赤ん坊を産んだ二人の母親は、不思議な関係性で一人の子どもを育てる。
子どもが可愛くて幸せだけど、母親の心模様は簡単には説明できない。


モーリス・ルヴェルはフランスの作家。「フランスのポー」と言われ、恐怖や悲哀を主題とした残酷物語の短編を多く残しています。
日本においても新青年等に翻訳紹介され、探偵小説の読者を熱狂させたほか、江戸川乱歩、夢野久作、小酒井不木などに絶賛されました。
乱歩は「淋しさ、悲しさ、怖さがルヴェルの短編の随所に漂っている」と言い、久作は「探偵小説で一番好きなのはルヴェルとポーだ」と言っています。
またラヴクラフトは自身のエッセイの中でルヴェルを絶賛し、アメリカと日本でのルヴェルの認知に多く貢献しました。
