 山本周五郎は「文学には“純”も“不純”もなく、“大衆”も“少数”もない。ただ“よい小説”と“わるい小説”があるばかりだ」を信念とし、普遍妥当性をもつ人間像の造形を生涯の目的とした作家で、時代小説を中心に沢山の作品を残しています。 その作風は今なお古臭さを感じさせず、繊細に描かれた人の心の機微や人情に、思わず笑わされたり、胸を打たれたりする魅力に溢れています。

＜あらすじ＞
親方の娘であるお菊との結婚のため、博打仲間との円を切る決意を胸に、友吉は上方に向かう。弟分の角太郎にお菊を預けて、友吉は上方で必死に働く。ところが3年経って帰ってきた友吉は、親分筋に当たる大工棟梁の息子である仁太郎に、友吉が旅立って半年も経たないうちに、角太郎とお菊が夫婦になったということを聞かされる。友吉は降り続く雨の中、匕首を左の袂に忍ばせ、角太郎とお菊が暮らすという大きな銀杏の木の露地奥の家へと向かうのだった。
角太郎は何故、友吉からお菊を奪ったのだろうか？様々な思いがすれ違うその先に、幸せはあるのだろうか……？

山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろ）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2022 panrolling Historical Fiction
