＜第十八回 夔州の民心と風土＞
大暦元年（766）の春、杜甫一家は夔州（きしゅう＝重慶市奉節県）に到着しました。そこは山あいの町で、三峡の一つ、瞿唐峡（くとうきょう）のすぐ西北にあります。一家は大暦3年春まで二年間、ここで生活しました。杜甫はその間、付近の名勝をたずね、山水をめで、430首もの詩を作っています。
その一方で彼は、この地特有の風俗習慣もよく観察し、詩に書きとめました。七言古詩「負薪行（ふしんこう）」は、力仕事に追われてやつれたまま老いてゆく女たちの境遇を、同じく「最能行」は、頑固だが並外れた技量を誇る船乗りたちの姿を、それぞれ活写しています。
また七言律詩「秋興八首」其の一は、夔州の秋の夕暮れのさびしさとともに、僻遠の地にあってなおも首都長安の将来を案じる心を詠んでいます。注目すべきは第3,4句の風景描写で、独特の壮大で崇高な雰囲気を帯び、彼が円熟の境地に入ったことを実感させるのです。
